This is what needs to be done not only for the Abbey but the Radicor Hotel. If we play our hand correctly we have an opportunity to bring back and even surpass previous standards. Once people understand this we may move on. The second step in our damage control plan is to delegate a spokesperson to address the media, perhaps even Trevallin himself. Our spokesperson here must do several things; they must be transparent regarding the problem, they must know whom to address (in this case various food critics and relating social media), and they must deliver a statement outlining the criteria from which the problem may have arisen (Bitesize PR 2013), and lastly plans to rectify the issue. This short term action yields long term benefits. Some of the problems which may be addressed in the PR statement can be seen in my twenty four hour plan and here as well: ‘Herewith appear to be the most pressing matters; one, infective and inexperienced entrepreneurial leadership. This is reflective almost in its entirety upon the leadership of Executive Chef, Marcus Vesty as he is the owner. It is of utmost importance that the Executive Chef of any restaurant, especially in a luxury hotel, shows passion and commitment throughout ensuring that standards remain constant (Ramsay 2008: UKTV 2003). The loss of any cognizance relating to those standards is detrimental to the reputation of the primary chef and the hotel from which they operate. I agree with Richard that food critics should be aware that the Executive Chef is not always present in premiere restaurants; nevertheless customers attend Marcus Vesty at the Abbey not his Sous Chef- Dan Tambling at the Abbey. Case studies examining how other world class chefs like Gordon Ramsay earn several Michelin stars while writing, producing and acting may prove necessary and prudent for Marcus if he wants to maintain the repute of the Abbey and by extension- himself. Taste tests measuring standards of the Chefs prior and post openings are commonplace to ensure that the recipes served are exactly those which described or designed by the executive chef (UKTV 2003). Despite the fact that Marcus’ immediate staff enjoys working with him; this is a luxury business and should be treated as such. The standards of a luxury hotel are also reflected in the price list. Here is where a menu and wine list of the Abbey would have been useful. Regardless this is what I can deduce; Trevallin suggested that the wine list in particular was not reflective of the wine quality but was priced too high. The average expenditure at Darling Harbor is between 89$ to 120$ at restaurants, it would be beneficial (if the wine list is not of premiere quality) to reduce costs of wine reflecting its quality to make it seem more reasonable. From the food quality and satisfaction survey I can only deduce breakfast and drinks; surveys should include lunch and dinner surveys as well (something to think about to for future surveys). Secondly, the lack of leadership has led to discord between the front of house provided by the Radicor and Marcus’ Matrie’d Hotel and kitchen staff. Miranda Caustin pointed out that Trevallin is a well-known critic; as such, it is the responsibility of the Matrie’d Hotel to inform the chefs and the wait staff. The service Trevallin received, even though ‘well oiled,’ lacked a personal touch. Johnson (2004) surveyed that guests feel most valued, when the business conducted between them and an organization is seamless and easy, and especially when there is an addition of personal tailored flair. This lack of communication is excusable in mediocre restaurants but not those which claim to be one of Australia’s premiere fine dining establishments. Additionally poor wait staff performance could be attributed to confusion between the several guidelines and manuals you sent me. For example the ‘Abbey Front of House Procedure’ states to address guests along the lines of , ‘Hi my name is Joe welcome to the Abbey Restaurant’ opposed to the other guides which once again teach wait staff how to greet a guest, albeit more reflective of a fine dining service, in a different manner. Why are guides from the same establishment teaching two different ways to greet a guest? Tom, your Food and Beverage department must realize that in the contemporary workspace, casual work is increasing (Steers Sharipo 2004), wait staff are hugely reflective of that casual work environment. This once again ties into a lack of leadership by Marcus, but it would have been far more effective to have highly trained staff tailored to the vision set forth by Marcus, including food and beverage reflective of the Abbey. What Trevallin outlined is reflective of the haphazard and sometimes contradictory training guides that you have sent me, and their resulting performances coupled with poor leadership. In new light, we can use Trevallin’s review to spin a positive light for both the Abbey and Radicor. Darling Harbor at Sydney received over twenty five million visitors. Which has only grown since 2009, it would be safe to assume this growth is an ideal market for the Abbey and the Radicor. For the data you sent me, I can outline that the Abbey had missed its target. Additionally the reviews you sent me were not dated as such, it was difficult for me to deduce when a drop in service standards was seen; however, Trevallin’s review enables us to redefine the Radicor’s concept. The Radicor’s philosophy of team empowerment is clearly evident in the loyalty between staff (which I gathered from the interviews). However, this type of ‘T. E. A. M’ approach, albeit empowering staff, makes no mention about quality or customer care. For instance the Ritz Carlton’s (The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company 2013) motto is ‘We are Ladies and Gentlemen serving Ladies and Gentlemen. ’ This concept empowers staff and suggests extravagance for guests. The same must be applied to the Radicor and the Abbey. Without having a clear concept a restaurant shall surely fail (Ramsay 2007: Ramsay 2008). It is therefore imperative that Marcus call in his reins and address issues of concept and wait staff at the Abbey. Additionally it may prove useful to redesign the original concept using a market analysis of competitors such as the Lobby Lounge or The Promenade at Darling Harbor. The market analysis may also reveal that for the 18-31 age demographic which visits Darling Harbor, French Asian cuisine is not the most appealing. It could be advantageous to change cuisine to reflect local Australian produce resources (Ramsay 2007), perhaps seafood. In conjunction having a celebrity chef such as Marcus around, post re-launch will be in itself attractive and this could be used promotionally: ‘Dinner for two with Marcus Vesty at the Abbey, Radicor Hotel Darling Harbor. ’ Additional quality checks from Marcus can ensure that he maintains his standards whilst engaging in other activities. How A Culture Of Shipping Drives Our Work EthicI call it a culture of shipping. Its one of our core values: Bias for Action. We know that ideas don’t matter unless they become action. We always err on the side of shipping, failing fast, and getting better as we go along. But before we get too far, I want to let you in on our dirty little secret. We don’t launch 100% of our features all at once. Don’t get me wrong, these were great features, but they were the 1.0 version. This means that for every aspect of the feature we actually launched, there are between 3 and 4 major improvements that were left on the to do list. In general, I believe that the common concept of a â€Å"launch† is very misleading. Most of the time, we think of a launch as a singular event. We slave away for months in hiding while building something brand new. When it finally comes time to make it public we launch, and make a big splash. There are blog posts, tweets, press releases, and sometimes fanfare. And then it’s over. We move on to the next project and look forward to another â€Å"big launch.† But, that’s not really how things work. Your audience will never absorb your launch the way you expect them to. They’re busy and distracted. You’re probably going to have to tell them about feature XYZ three or four times before they actually pay attention. In short, launches shouldn’t be a singular event. They are just the beginning. They should really be just one singular step in an overall process of iteration. Launches should be one singular step in an overall process of iterationIteration is really at the heart of what makes for a great â€Å"culture of shipping.† Everything is iterative, including your skills and abilities, your marketing efforts, and your feature launches. A process of getting something out there and then making slow and steady improvements over time is what defines ’s culture. It isn’t sexy, but dang it if it doesn’t work. So, let’s get practical. What can you do to make sure your team builds a culture of shipping? Here are a few of the things we do every day to keep the shipping alive. 1. Wins Make for More Wins When planning something new you are bound to develop big visions of excellence and grander. Take it easy cowboy/girl. Rather than trying to build the biggest and best right out of the gate, break your project into pieces. Think of it as a series of â€Å"launches† rather than one massive unveiling. Breaking projects down into tiny launch-able pieces will give you and your team some early wins. Wins can easily turn into momentum and momentum is exactly what fuels a culture of shipping. Around here, we like to break feature development into a series of 1-2 week projects- each one ending with a launch of some kind. We try not to focus on the whole enchilada. Rather, we focus on the smaller iterative goals that will need to be met in order to succeed. This ultra simple framework keeps us focused and motivated, and ultimately leads to the big win. Wins make for more wins.2. We Assume that Our Customers Know More Than Us When planning a new feature or launch, it can be easy to assume that you are the smartest person in the room. Work on a feature long enough and you’ll believe that no one understands it better than you. Unfortunately, you’ll probably be right. So, what if no one understands it but you? Feedback matters a lot. The world loves to emphasize the myth of the â€Å"lone genius† or the Steve Jobs personality in all of us. WRONG. There isn’t a such things as a lone genius in real life. In real life those geniuses had spouses, colleagues, or competitors that drove them and made them better. For a startup like , those drivers are our users. With every feature we launch, we try to leave a lot of room for customers to influence version 2.0. When a new feature goes live, our list of back burner items becomes irrelevant. From that point forward, customer feedback shapes version 2.0. There isn’t a such things as a lone genius in real life.3. We Focus on Failing Fast Most of us try to avoid making mistakes. If we can’t avoid them, we at least try to make sure no one notices them when they happen. But, this reflex is in itself a mistake. Instead, the better approach is to assume that you will fail and build it right into your process. We call this failing fast. Rather than trying to be perfect, aim to fail as quickly as possible. If you’re building something new, show it to someone else as soon as you can. Even before you’re ready. Get feedback. Figure out what’s wrong The sooner you know what’s wrong, the sooner you can improve it, and that will help you move faster. My background is in graphic design, and this can be a huge problem in that industry. Designers love to â€Å"move pixels† and make things perfect before showing their work to anyone. But, this is a mistake. It makes them slow and oftentimes damages the end result. Don’t assume you know it all. Assume that you will fail, and build it right into your process so that you know to expect it. Assume that you will fail, and build it right into your process so that you know to expect it.4. We Keep Things Simple Complicated features are bad for users (and for you). At , we’ve paid that price before. For example, the first version of ReQueue was overbuilt. Because we didn’t ship soon enough, the feature ended up getting too complicated and messy. When we gave it to a set of beta users and they were confused. They didn’t understand how to make the feature do what we said it could do. We ended up scrapping the entire project and building something different that was much simpler and more iterative. It was a lesson we don’t want to have to learn twice. Over time, we’ve learned to keep things as simple as possible. Sometime complex features are necessary, but it is better to iterate our way into them, rather than building it all at once. Stay iterative. Keep it simple. Ship on time! #aCultureOfShipping #OverheardAt5. Despite What You Believe, Launch Day Doesn’t Really Matter I’ve already mentioned that launch day barely matters, but it bears repeating. Teams routinely put a lot of time into their big unveiling to find out that no one was really paying attention. The true art of the launching comes from realizing that launching is a process, not an event. It’s about the process of shipping, not just launching. From a marketing standpoint this means that we should be talking about new features for week and months after they launch. From a product standpoint this means that we should be building and perfecting a feature for months after they are live. This isn’t a one and done type of scenario. We are so conditioned to believe that launch day is an event. We believe that our marketing is a narrative and that customers read every page, but they don’t. Marketing is messy. Shipping is messy. You’re better off with a process that embraces the mess than one that works against it.

Certain people may call it weird, and animal rights folks would call it animal cruelty, but in our culture, it is for healing and to pay our respects to our ancestors. The ceremonies are very sacred and are done by a shaman. A shaman in our culture is someone who can speak to spirits like a witch doctor. A pig or chicken is sacrificed depending on whether the ceremony performed is large or small. The shaman sets up the table with incense, paper made with circle imprints (money for the spirits), and a tea set filled with blessed water. After the pig or chicken is cleaned, it is set on the table and the shaman starts chanting or calling down the spirit. With a chicken, the ceremony usually takes about thirty minutes to an hour; with a pig, it can take an hour to an hour and a half. Ceremonies in the Iu-Mein culture are part of our lives. They are done as often as they are needed, but at least once a year. There are different kinds of ceremonies done for healing when someone is sick, for good luck for the year, weddings, and for death. Iu-Mein's believe in both good and bad spirits. Whenever someone is sick, we believe it is due to a hungry spirit. Our ceremony with the pig or chicken is meant to please the spirit by feeding them, paying them by burning paper "money," and by giving them water. There are all kinds of spirits that can touch a person to make them sick, like parents, grandparents, or any relatives who have passed away. There is not much about Iu-Mein culture in our history books, but books have been written about the Iu-Mein people.

Modern Frankenstein Essay

In today’s society there are many people that could be considered as ‘modern Frankensteins’. Scientists have made it possible for us to choose the sex of our child by gender selection, clone sheep-remember Dolly the Sheep? And of course, let us not forget the huge growth in cosmetic surgery. Have today’s scientist’s, like Frankenstein, gone too far in trying to create the perfect human? The following video charts Michael Jackson’s ever increasing cosmetic surgeries. This world renowned superstar wanted to have the ‘perfect’ face and science made this possible. But did they go too far? Based on this video and the text, is there a danger in wanting to achieve ‘perfection’? Do these forms illuminate the dangers of becoming ‘Godlike’ by changing your physical appearance (which is God given) and by creating life? Is Michael Jackson now the ‘modern monster’? He like Frankenstein’s Monster is isolated and not understood because of his frightening and grotesque appearance, but there is the underlying need for acceptance in a society that is very much focused on looks. Whilst you’re watching this video I want you to think about the following things and be able to complete the attached questionnaire. Parallels that can be drawn between Frankenstein and today’s scientists: Both are actively playing with life. Both wanting to achieve the ideal. Parallels between Michael and the Monster The Monster was created to be an ‘angel’ but his appearance did not match his personality. Frankenstein made a gross oversight by not making his creation look angelic, and as a result, he was marginalised, hated, feared, abused, taunted and unloved by society. Similarly, Michael has made himself a social outcast and extremely isolated by having too much cosmetic surgery. Both are products of maybe the extremes of the successful advances in science-science used in the wrong way but for good reasons. It is said on the video of Michael Jackson’s father Joe Jackson ‘that he wanted to create the right thing but did this in the wrong way. ‘ Much like Frankenstein. Both Michael Jackson and The Monster are concerned with acceptance. They have an overwhelming need for this because both want a life filled with peace, love and kindness, yet because of the way they look, this is almost impossible. Would you consider Michael Jackson to be a Monster based on his appearance? Would you consider Frankenstein’s Monster as a monster based on our understanding of what a Monster is and on what you have read? Do you have any sympathy for the Monster because he found it difficult to be kind and loving because he was met with so much hate because of how he looked? Do you think that the cosmetic surgeon who worked on Michael Jackson went too far? Is being a Monster based on one’s appearance or one’s personality? Think about comparing The Monster or Michael Jackson to someone like Hitler who did monstrous things? Think about whether you judge people based on their looks? Improving Self-Motivation in Employees Essay - 2027 Words

Organizational researchers see employee motivation as a fundamental building block in the development of successful businesses. A motivated workforce represents both a competitive advantage as well as a strategic asset in the current corporate world, which is why the issue of building self-motivation in employees has sparked interest in managers. It not only improves the business side of the organization, but does so by keeping employees’ needs met, which improves their well-being. First, the issue of employees’ motivation will be addressed. Second, the motivational theory that best applies to this issue will be described and assessed. In order to do this, the first issue to address is what kind of work environment will encourage their self-motivation. The Self-Determinati on Theory best describes what supports an individual’s tendencies to behave in an effective and healthy way which is why I chose it as the best theory to fit this motivational issue. This theory was developed by Edward L. Deci and Richard M. Ryan and has been researched by many others all over the world. This theory is the basic idea that the needs for autonomy, competence, and relatedness are seen as three universal needs for all individuals and can be applied throughout all aspects of their lives (Milyavskaya Koestner, 2011). This theory generally applies to activities that people find more challenging or interesting and Gagne and Deci argued that ‘a supportive work climate satisfied the fundamental psychological needs of autonomy, competence, and relatedness postulated by the Self-Determination Theory’ (Ryan Deci, 2000). A climate that satisfies these three needs can affect employees’ intrinsic motivation. If their intrinsic motivation increases, so w ill the camaraderie and success in the organization as a whole.
